The sermon covered three sections:

1) Do you see Future or Past?
2) Sinner or Sin?
3) Victory or Odds?

Future or Past?

Romans 8:24-25  hope that is seen is not hope

Hope is based on the fact that we haven’t obtained what we’re hoping for.

John 20:24-29  Jesus and doubting Thomas

We are blessed because we have not seen Jesus yet we believe on him.

Helen Keller quote:  “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”

Our focus should be on the future and the visions we have for it and not on the faults and mistakes of our past.

Pearl Necklace story:  A story about a little girl who saves up her money to buy a dime-store pearl necklace that she loves.  Her father asks her “do you love me” and she replies “yes” and he says “then give me your pearls” in which she says “no” two different times.  When she finally decides to give up the pearls to her father, he gives to her in exchange a new box with genuine pearls in them.

God wants to give us great things but we have to let go of the old things we have been holding on to even if we worked very hard to get them.

Acts 10:9-15  Jesus tells Peter to eat

Peter needed to give up his old way of thinking for God to bless him with a new way of thinking.  There are times when we need to give up what we are holding on to for God to give us something better.

Philippians 3:14   press toward the mark for the prize

Sinner or Sin?

John 8:1-15  woman caught in adultery

Jesus cared more about the woman’s soul instead of looking at her sin.  The scribes wanted to tempt Jesus but he told them “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”  We all have sin in us and we should not look at people and judge them for their sins but look past their sins and see the person’s soul that needs the truth of Jesus.

Psalms 130:3  who could stand?

We all have sin in us.

Galatians 6:1   restore such an one in spirit of meekness

We should not cast down someone in sin or a fault but we should be there to help them out because we are subject to falling to the same thing if we do not recognize we are not perfect ourselves.

Victory or Odds?

Numbers 13:17-20, 25-33  spying out the land

The spies that Moses sent to spy out the land of Canaan brought back an evil report.
All they could see were the obstacles and not the victory.  It may seem like the odds are against us but God is not against us and he wants us to overcome those things and claim the victory while trusting in him.

2 Kings 6:14-17  going after prophet of God

The king’s men came for the prophet of God and his servant feared what would happen to them and the prophet told him “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”  God who looks out for us is powerful enough to overcome whatever may come against us.

Habakkuk 2:2-4   vision yet for an appointed time

We must hold on to our visions and goals we have in God because God will bring them to pass when it is the right time.
