Jeff started out by showing us some “props,” such as a ballcap that said, “Proud to be a Christian.”  He pointed out that the slogan on the cap was actually an oxymoron (a self-contradictory statement) such as “jumbo shrimp,” “military intelligence”, or “pretty ugly.”  The dictionary definition of proud shows that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the Biblical definition of the term shows it to be pretty negative.

1 John 2:15-17  …the pride of life…

King David told Solomon to show himself a man.

This message had three parts:

1.                  How to recognize pride

2.                  How to destroy pride

3.                  How to prevent pride

How to recognize pride

Isaiah 14:9-16  …the five I’s of Satan

Satan had an “I” problem.  How do we spell pr-I-de?”

Psalms 101:5  …a proud heart will not I suffer.

Proverbs 6:16  There are six things that God hates, and a proud look is one of them.

Proverbs 16:5  Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination…

Jeff went on to say, “I’m proud to be a Christian; I’m humble to be a Christian.”

Samuel 15:22-23  …to obey is better than sacrifice

Who is the man in me?

How to destroy pride

            Humble yourself

2 Chronicles 7:14  If my people … shall humble themselves

James 4:6  …He giveth more grace … resisteth the proud…

Psalms 51:1-17  .. a broken and a contrite heart…

How to prevent pride

Proverbs 15:33  …fear of the Lord is the beginning of instruction

Proverbs 22:4  …By humility and fear of the LORD are riches…

Isaiah 57:15 …the heart of the contrite ones.

Luke 14:11  … he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

1 Peter 5:5-7 …be clothed with humility

Malachi 2:8  …walk humbly with thy God?

Luke 18:9-14  Two men went up to the temple to pray…

Jeff had Jason Burton and Brent Havisto come up to the front and act out the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican.  The Pharisee, so proud of his “accomplishments” and the publican, so ashamed of himself for falling short, yet Jesus tells us that the publican went out justified.

Two men praying:  which man are you?  Many Bible lessons seem to be in two’s:  Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Ishmael, Esau and Jacob, Joseph and his brothers, Moses and Aaron, Moses and Pharaoh, Joshua and Caleb, Naomi and Ruth, King Saul and David, David and Goliath, Mary and Joseph, Jesus and the devil in the wilderness, the rich man and Lazarus, Martha and Mary, the elder son and the prodigal son, the wheat and the tares, the right hand and the left hand, the righteous and the wicked, life and death, Heaven and Hell, God and the devil.  Whose side are you on?  Which man are you?  In 2009, everything is still in two’s … good and evil, Democrat and Republican, right wing and left wing, pro-life and abortion, creation and evolution, and so on.

The man in me, which man will you be?
